So people have problems with patients following them or shadowing them. What does that actually mean?

Well, shadowing is a form of flattery, really. Because when a person has dementia and they're not sure what they're supposed to be doing, if somebody in the environment looks like they know what they're doing, isn't it brilliant of them to fall in behind them? Because obviously, they know what they're doing. So, people with dementia shadow that person everywhere they go and rather than viewing it as a problem, the best bet is to view it as a compliment. And turn around to them throughout the shadowing and say, "I'm going to give you something to do right here." They're going to drop what they're doing, do whatever you ask them to do but then they're going to follow you into the next room. You just have to accept the shadowing and not be upset by it.
