If a person misses out on essential nutrients it will limit the person’s resistance to the illness. Therefore it is important to ensure that the person eats a well-balanced diet, consisting of high fibre foods for a healthy digestive system, Calcium and Vitamin D for strong teeth and bones, as people suffering from dementia are more a risk from falls. It is also important them to intake plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration as a lack of fluids can add to the confusion.

If this is not the case that it would be prudent to seek medical advice as to what supplements may be given. It is important for the person not to eat too many fatty or sweet, sugary foods as this can lead to other problems, for example, a considerable weight gain, and or increase mood swings.

Symptoms of dementia can make a person forget to eat or think that they have already eaten, it is, therefore, important to ensure in these instances that they are accompanied at mealtimes. The person may have difficulty at some stage with using cutlery, it is still possible to offer them a well-balanced diet using finger foods
